FOR ALL TAG HOLDERS - you have til midnight Monday night to accept bid or accept compensation. Please state your declaration, and please post contract for player if you are keeping them.
......................
Now the holder of the tag only has to match the AAS, they do not have to match the years and can rearrange the salaries as they see fit for their team, as long as they are following the rules for salary spread.
Here are the guidelines for the tag holder on deciding the years of the contract.
If AAS <= $3M, 1 - 6 years. If the offer is 400k - 749k you can only keep them for a maximum of 3 years at this salary, but you have the option to raise it to 750k and keep them 4-6 years If AAS > $3M, 2 - 6 years If AAS > $6M, 2 - 6 years If AAS > $9M, 3 - 6 years If AAS > $12M, 3 - 6 years If AAS > $15M, 4 - 6 years
Now if no one offers a bid on an RFA, the tag holder can choose either to keep them 1-3 years on a 500k salary, or 4-6 years on a 800k salary.
The bidder can always make a contract term LONGER than the minimum number of years since the AAS only determines the MINIMUM term.
As in all FA bidding, the bidder must clearly state the 1.) contract term (number of years), 2.) total contract amount, 3.) AAS, and 4.) breakdown of the salary offer for each year of term of the contract OR clearly state it is equally allocated to each year. If the offer is not specific and include the above criteria, then it will be deemed an invalid bid.
Since the bidding is for a RFA, then pursuant to Rule 12, the GM who held the restricted player has 48 hours to match the winning bid, and may restructure that bid for a total contract amount no less and a term no longer than that of the "winning" bid. If the restricting GM chooses not to match the offer, then the winning bidder is obligated to sign the player to the exact terms of the winning bid - there is NO option to remove or reneg on any bid placed.
The 48 hour acceptance "clock" will commence with the winning bid being posted of the last player of the RFA batch by the League Office.
The discussion above applies ONLY TO RESTRICTED free agent bidding. Normal, or Unrestricted, free agent bidding is covered under general FA bidding rulings.
RFA Compensation If a GM loses a player in the RFA process he is entitled compensation as follows RFA signs with new team for AAS of: If AAS is $5,000,000 or less (Franchise losing player receives nothing) If AAS between $5,000,001 - $8,000,000 (Franchise losing player receives Winning Team's 3rd rnd pick in the FYPD + 3rd rnd Supplemental pick) If AAS between $8,000,001 - 11,000,000 (Franchise losing player receives Winning Team's 2nd rnd pick in the FYPD + 2nd rnd Supplemental pick) If AAS is 11,000,001 -14,000,000 (Franchise losing player receives Winning Team's 1st rnd pick in the FYPD + 1st rnd Supplemental pick) If AAS is 14,000,001 or greater (Franchise losing player receives Winning Team's 1st rnd pick in the FYPD + 2 1st rnd Supplemental picks)
All picks will be determined by the order of the standings for the following seasons, including supplemental picks (by order of the team losing the player)

those guidelines would still be subject to the limitation knights cited. those guidelines are just theoretical maximums but if the rules say no longer than the winning bid, that limitation will restrict the maximum to fewer years.

That seems like it would be true but there are parts of that rule we don't follow already, like how GMs "may restructure that bid for a total contract amount no less" than the winning bid. GMs do that all the time by reducing the # of years they pay the winning bids AAS. I am confused about the lack of clarification on this.

Why make it so complicated? Would probably work way better if teams just agreed to match or rejected option to match. Too many loopholes.

Setting the record straight... As Matthew highlighted, the GM has the opportunity to extend the contract deal at the current AAS value. If a GM has the opportunity to sign a player to a longer term contract, they are allowed to do so. The RF Tag is meant to b favorable from a "control" standpoint, and that's why it has become the much more favorable tag compared to the franchise.
There may be some room for discussion this offseason, but as the rule is set, I have no problem with teams wanting to commit to longer terms. It increases their risk on their end, and if they so choose to do that I am fine with it.
