Here is a thought to consider for next year. If we're going to continue to "forbid" trading of picks, then let the handshake deals get posted as soon as that draft pick is made, rather than waiting until the end of the draft. Or better yet, allow the trading of picks - but only like a week before the draft starts. The ban seems to effectively achieve the desired results, at least until the season ends and the "hand shake" deals start. From that point on the ban on trading picks is completely ineffective and probably creates more confusion and problems than anything else.

the upside of john's idea is that if(when) a handshake deal gets vetoed and has a domino effect, there will be a lot of disgruntled managers. which isn't a good thing for the league. marlins leaving left some unhappy managers, but teams were just back where they started so it wasn't all that awful, but it's 100x worse if it happens once picks have already been made because then teams are no longer back where they started because they can't get the pick back to take who they want. so guys would be a lot more unhappy in that scenario (yes, they may have known the risk, but its still not good for the league as a whole to knowingly have a system that leads to such results). so preventing such disruption/confusion is worthwhile. not saying i'm for lifting the ban as i like it in theory (and i don't know if we can ban handshakes), just that john makes a good point that in practice the current way of doing things might cause as many problems as it solves. i would be up for whatever solution kept the most helpful aspects of the ban, but addressed some of the problems with the ban at the same time.

We are in two other league that allow trading of current year picks at any time (but not future picks). Trades are posted, voted on and approved way before the draft. That allows the new owner to know where he stands and can make plans, even trade the pick again (subject to approval again, of course). There seems to be very little reason to not allow that, other than the specious claim that the bottom teams won't get good players if they trade their Rd #1 picks.
Some owners are always going to make poor decisions -- whether in picking or trading, so barring their trading of picks is no guarantee of their future success.

I am also in leagues that allow it Tampa, but I am in a 30 team league that 7 years in has the same 10-12 teams competing every season. They are also the same teams that acquire everyone elses 1st and 2nd round picks and continue to draft a lot of the top prospects. So 2/3 of the league is irrelevant because of trading away their picks, and it has essentially turned a 30 team league into a 12 team league... The forbidding of the draft pick trading has nothing to do with the impact of teams this year or next year, but protecting the competitive balance of the teams 3-4-5 years out. I see it the way few do, and that's not the here and now. In 5 years I want 25 teams to think they have a shot at winning and the remaining 5 to think they are a year or two away.
I can't prevent handshake agreements on future deals, but EVERY GM has to realize they are the ones taking the risk when they plan that far out ahead, and it shouldn't come back on the way the rules are laid out because they are written for a purpose.
And every owner will make a bad trade that they will look back on and be disgusted at, but the point is to protect bad teams from making poorer decisions.

SO what's the harm Jimmy to allow trading picks few weeks before the draft starts? You can open a 10 day window before the draft and close it 2 days before the draft so that way it would not slow down a draft.

Me, I don't care if I ever even get close to winning a championship. I just want to get players I like and have fun. As far as I know this league is not for money.
